📣Read our final project report!Â
The report presents our findings, drawing on social media analysis, interviews with carriers of hereditary cancer syndromes (BRCA and Lynch syndrome-related), and a stakeholder workshop.Â
In the report, we highlight both the opportunities and challenges social media present for carriers of hereditary cancer syndromes. We pair our findings with practical recommendations for creators, social media users, healthcare professionals, and platforms. (We do not provide any medical suggestions!)
During the final stakeholder workshop held at the University of Sheffield on 3 November 2025, we presented our project findings and plans for the future.
In this episode of The Positive Gene Podcast, host Sara Kavanaugh takes the mic on the road in London with Dr. Stefania Vicari and Dr. Hannah Ditchfield. Together, they explore how research into social media is reshaping what we know about hereditary cancer, advocacy, and the very word previvor.Â
Hannah Ditchfield presented preliminary findings for the Period Equity Alliance: a collective of charities and organisations aiming to improve education on menstrual health. Hannah drew on our findings related to content moderation practices on social media and the impacts they have on how hereditary cancer stories are told. Content moderation is a problem in the context of menstrual health and the Period Equity Alliance were interested -and disheartened-Â to learn that these practices negatively impact other areas of women's health (such as documenting mastectomy experiences).Â
Presentation delivered at the 2025 Lynch Syndrome UK annual conference, Warwick, 22 March 2025.
Since we are halfway through the project, we have produced a short summary about what we have done so far and where we are going next. Have a look at the full summary to learn more!
Our student in residence Yifeng Zhang developed a digital animation about Lynch Syndrome. Have a look at Yifeng's animation to see if you know enough about this condition! If the animation is not for you, check out this info page.
